What is the Seed Library?
The Seed Library is a collection of seeds (vegetable and herb) that patrons can borrow to plant and grow at home. During planting season, patrons can check out seeds from the library and grow them. Our hope is that patrons will save seeds from the plants they grow and donate some seeds back to the library, thereby helping to build the collection. By saving seeds as a community we help create local seed stocks that are better acclimated to our climate. While there is no obligation to save and return seeds, especially if patrons are new to seed saving, our hope is that as patrons grow as a gardener and seed saver they will consider sharing their seeds with the Seed Library.
Our Seed Library is about…
- Encouraging our community to garden
- Reconnecting our community to the traditions of growing tasty, healthy food and to the outdoors and wildlife
- Educating our community about growing, harvesting, and saving seeds
- Creating a community-sustained seed collection at our Library
- Providing information, instruction and education about sustainable gardening
How it works:
- No library card is necessary!
- Seeds packets are “checked out” from the library with the understanding that patrons will grow the seeds.
- Seed packets are free.
- Adults may check out 3 packets of seeds at a time.
- We hope that patrons will save seeds from the plants and return a similar package of seeds to the library at the end of the growing season.
- If you have never saved seed before, Seeds of Diversity has simple instructions for saving tomatoes, peas, beans, and lettuce. We encourage beginners to try saving seed from these easy vegetables first.
- There is no fine if the seeds are not returned.
- Our seed collection depends on donations and seasonality.
- Anyone can donate seed to our collection.
- We accept all seeds, but try to focus on vegetables that are easy to grow and save.
- We do not collect genetically modified seed or seed from hybrid plants.
